Kayaking on the Waits River, Bradford, Vermont 9/13/21

Kayaking the “affluence” in Bradford, Vermont. It’s basically where the Waits River meets the Connecticut River. Great location for bird watching in the summer, with ducks, heron. I’ve even seen a deer here midday (I have a picture somewhere, will upload it eventually). Mid-September is a bit late in the season, but still a great kayak with channels and a nice Hitchcock moment about halfway through.

Kayaking on Long Pond, Benton, New Hampshire (8/15/21)

Kayaking on Long Pond, in Benton, New Hampshire. You have to drive up into the hills a bit to get to this one. Quite isolated, no houses. Animal tally: a couple of ducks, a couple of turtles, and a huge moose about half-way through.

French Pond, Haverhill, New Hampshire (8/13/21) – kayaking

Another slow paddle around French Pond in Haverhill, NH, this time shooting at 4k to see how it compares with the 1080p from the day before, which was deleted, because wow (why yes, someone did just get a GoPro). It was a bit warmer than the 12th — around the mid-90s even at noon — and you could definitely see the difference in the lower numbers of turtles. More humans though, it being Friday.

Biking Franconia Notch Bike Path from The Basin, Lincoln, NH (8/11/21)

Remember that time we just got the GoPro and rushed off to Franconia Notch with the bike to try it out and it was overcast at home but sprinkling at The Basin and by the time we got two miles north it was pouring like hell? Boy, I do. 🙂 The Basin to Franconia State Park and back, various precipitation.

Fort Foster

Location: Fort Foster, Kittery, Maine

Date: 07/24/21

Visited Fort Foster in Kittery for the first time yesterday. A bit pricey to get in ($21 per car), but what a great location. Several rocky beaches, sheltered so not much in terms of waves. We were there at high tide, but low tide is supposed to be a tidal pool bonanza. Great place for kids (the old ?stockade? is now a handy playground… there’s a metaphor there somewhere) and dogs.

Ice Castles 2021

Location: Woodstock, NH

Date: 01/30/21

Finally hit the Ice Castles in Woodstock, NH this year. Cooooooooold, but very cool.

Lake Willoughby, Winter Edition

Location: Lake Willoughby, Vermont

Date: 2/22/21

We headed out to hike the Burke Mountain Overlook, but they close the road in the winter, and there wasn’t an easy way to access it. Short hike, with the plus that it overlooks Lake Willoughby. Sooo, we went to the lake instead. Just as photogenic in the winter, with ice shacks instead of boats. Hit up St. J’s Locally Social Coffee for Dirty Chais and Mocha Lattes on the way back through… it was a good day.

Owl’s Head Mountain

Location: Owl’s Head Mountain, Groton VT

Date: 2/20/21

Finally getting these online from a couple of weeks ago. The access road to Owl’s Head Mountain in the Groton State Forest is closed in the winter, making this a bit of a trek. 3.2 miles, just under 500 feet in elevation (much of it right at the end), it’s a bit high on the easy end for a hike, but nice and uncrowded. Bonus: bobcat tracks criss-crossed the trail all the way up.

Mount Willard

Location: Bretton Woods, NH

Date: 1/25/21

Got out a few times last week, but this was the best, as always. Located in Bretton Woods, Mount Willard is a moderate, 3.2 out and back hike. There’s a bit of elevation, hence moderate, and it can be fairly heavily trafficked on the weekends. The view is just amazing. You have to pass the Omni Mount Washington to get there, which on a clear day…
